A good job nearly complete in only a few days but only achieved with the assistance of a squad of very willing and able helpers from Project Step Forward – a Tees Valley group of charities involved in getting people into work.

“Hi All
Just to let everybody know that the first defibrillator has now been installed and is situated on the outside wall of the squash club in the top car park. Coordinates (54.596912, -1.323663).
The access code for the cabinet is 0074 followed by the “tick” button. The door will then need to be pulled down and the AED taken out.
It has been registered with the North East Ambulance Service who will pass on full details when someone calls 999.
The Charity would like to take this opportunity to Thank Kevin Waterworth, all hosted clubs, CiC@74, North East Football Academy, Billingham Buffs and all others for all their help in fundraising to make this possible.
We hope to put our second AED on site shortly. Our target is 3 AEDs to cover the full site.
Once again your help is most appreciated.
Bill Pickersgill  (Charity Chairman)”

Well, the season is almost over. Hasn’t it gone too quickly?
We have had a happy, friendly summer and whilst we may not have been top in any of the Leagues, there have been a great number of highs and pleasing successes.
On behalf of the Committee and Team Leaders – thank you for your participation and support,  and huge thanks to those Ladies who, yet again, saved the day in supplementing the Men in the C&TBL Leagues and to those Men who stepped up and played in League matches they are not usually involved in. We succeeded in honouring all of our commitments.

Competition News, Forthcoming Events, Fundraising Competitions, Sports Charity of the Year

Norton Bowling Club Members’ congratulations to our Team for in winning the Stuart Waites Memorial Trophy on Saturday 17th June.  The round robin tournament played at Ropner Park against 11 other local clubs had a very close ending with the result dependant on the final end, final bowl and a measure against a Synthonia Team!  Thus, Middlesbrough came second, having been beaten by one point only. The Trophy was last won by Norton in 2005 by Eric McIntosh and his Team.

(l-r: Keith Webster, Kevin Taylor, Martin Wright and John Parkin)

Teams are entered in 3 more C&TBL Competitions – pairs, triples and rinks – which will be played during the coming weeks, so look out for news of their progress.

Grounds Maintenance and Tidy-up Day

Thanks to all those who came and helped with cleaning,  weeding and cutting hedges etc. There are always  jobs to do to keep the surrounds of the Green looking  spick and span, so volunteers are welcome at any time.

Next Social Competition

This is the Silver Bowl Trophy being held on Monday, 17th July starting at 6.30pm (prompt).

The format is Drawn Pairs, 4 bowls each, playing in accordance with Australian Pairs rules for sequence of play (i.e. lead bowls 2 woods, 2nd bowls 4 woods then lead bowls their last two woods, each in turn with the opposite number, so each team member takes turn as lead and skip).

Good fun! Hope to see everyone on the evening!

Thanks for your support!”

Also an invitation from the Hockey Club re an event on Saturday, 8th July:

As you are aware we are having our pitch refurbished over the summer. As an end to the old pitch we are holding a ‘Celebration of Hockey’ on Saturday 8th July and would like to invite you to be part of it.

Between 2:30-4 times we will be hosting a trial session for walking hockey which I hope would be of interest to your members.  We feel that it is something new you could try, they could go to the bar afterwards and hopefully, weather dependant, watch a little cricket afterwards.

We are hoping to raise a little bit of money towards our target on the day but it is mainly about people coming and having a good day.

Please could you forward this to your members and let me know if it there is interest so I can plan the session according to the numbers we can expect.

Once I have finalised the full day I will forward the details to you in case you, family or friends wish to join us in any other part.

We appreciate any support you can give.

Many thanks, Emily Good, Norton Hockey Club”

Let Martin know if you are interested in taking part and he will pass your name on to Emily.

News Round-up

First of all, thank you to those who have stepped up to help fulfil our commitments in fielding the teams in the various league matches each week. John and Margaret are asking for more Members (especially Men) to sign up for the Friday evening Mixed Triples League. The format is 4 rinks, 3 bowls each, 15 ends. You will find that it is a very sociable evening and suitable for all levels of ability.

This year’s Sunday morning Annual Social Challenge Match against MTASSA was a great success, this time won by the visitors as the result of a very close long game. The picture shows Martin handing over the Dennis Shaw Memorial Shield to Chris Wharam of MTASSA.

6th May, 2017

Opening round-up, Forthcoming Events, Defibrillators, Competitions and Invitations.

Thanks to all those who came and helped clean and tidy up the grounds in preparation for opening.

Our opening up for the 2017 went well with nearly all the Members signing up again and enjoying a first roll up in the fine sunshine, even though a little chilly at times in the cool breeze.

The 1st Social Competition was a Whistle Stop Drawn Pairs, followed by a Bring and Eat Tea on Saturday, 22nd April.

This year’s worthy winners were Kevin Taylor and Ian Richmond – very well done to both of them!

Sunday, 21st May 10.00 am (prompt) start. Format will be decided on the day – 4 rinks of triples or fours, 15 ends, depending upon number attending.

Please sign up on the Mens or Ladies Rooms’ notice boards.

(MTASSA = Middlesbrough Telephone Area Sports and Social Association –ie ex-British Telecom).

2nd Social Competition for 2017 – MIX AND MATCH TRIPLES

Sunday, 4th June starting at 2.30 pm (please arrive at 2.00 for the Draw to take place).

“The Norton Sports Charity approached all hosted clubs to ask if they would be willing to donate £200 towards the cost of procuring and installing 3 defibrillators around the site.

I am pleased to inform you that our Committee have agreed to respond positively.

The nearest machine to the Bowling Green will be on the outside of the Squash Courts.”

Jack Mee.

John Parkin and Martin Wright invite all our new Club Members to an “Introduction to Bowling in Competition” – an informal session being held on Monday, 22nd May at 7pm in the Pavilion (provisional date).

The proposed content of the session will include:-

  • team etiquette on the Green,
  • responsibilities of each player in a team,
  • basic rules, tactical tips and reading the head,
  • response to frequently asked general questions about playing the game.

It is felt that a discussion session off the Green would help both our new members and anyone else interested in improving their knowledge of bowling.

It is also hoped that the session will prepare and encourage new members to take part in and enjoy the informal social competitions arranged throughout the season.

As members of the C&TBL we pay for and are expected to enter teams in various events that are in addition to the Thursday and Saturday Section Fixtures.

The first of these competitions is the Woodroffe Cup in which we are drawn to play North End in the opening round.

Please keep an eye on the Men’s notice board for full details of these competitions .

The first round match of the Coronation Cup knockout competition, played as part of the Saturday Section, was yesterday versus Ropner Park. Unfortunately, we came second.

Don’t forget to view our new, official website which we will continually develop, add news, photographs and eventually the results achieved in the various leagues.
